Words by Jo DaCunha from a high scoring set of T20 games

After a successful 1st round in the T20 WEPL Cup against local rivals Royal Wootton Bassett and Cirencester, round 2 had fireworks in store for us as the 1st XI travelled to Potterne on a scorching day set up for some quality T20 cricket.

The hosts won the the toss opted to field first. The SCC openers fell early bringing in Chris Aubrey and Conor Taylor; this is where the party started with some scintillating and glorious striking of the ball. Unfortunately, Chris fell just short of a deserved ton with 97 of 37 balls that brought an end to a magnificent partnership of 141 runs with Conor. Conor continued to motor on but was caught towards the end of the innings and finished on 71 runs. The innings finished 253/7 of 20 overs with a cameo from Chris Baker at the end.

In response Potterne came out with some aggressive hitting. With the openers scoring 139 between them. Dean Williamson picked up 3 important wickets to keep things in check at the high scoring ground. Adam Tucker bowled a tight spell which gave Swindon a route back into the game picking up 2 wickets along the way.

The game came down to the last 2 overs, with the home side needing 24 runs to win. In the penultimate over, Chris Aubrey bowled excellently only going for 9 runs and getting the vital wicket of Kieran Bull, who looked set to take Potterne home with a quick fire 46 of 17 balls. In the final over Conor showed composure and produced a masterclass in bowling at the death, allowing Swindon secure the win by 11 runs.

Following a quick turnaround, with the Swindon players feeling the effects of 20 overs in the sun, it was time to take on Trowbridge who won the toss and elected to bat first.

Trowbridge set a very respectable score of 261/5, with the opener Ismail Suleman scoring 106 of 54 balls. Adam Tucker also picked up two crucial wickets of Ismail and Tom Oakley (58 of 23) who helped them sprint towards that huge total. Unfortunately Swindon didn’t respond well enough, with efforts from Conor Taylor (51 of 25) and Tom Codling (50 of 22) not quiet enough as Trowbridge bowled us out for 213.

It was great to see some of the batters expressing themselves and the high scoring games were a good spectacle for those in attendance and watching online. Thanks to Potterne for hosting. A few snaps from the day are HERE.

Swindon play their next T20 game in the Wallop against Burbage and will be keen to keep on scoring heavily.
