Last Friday saw the club host the biggest fixtures in Wiltshire Crickets Calendar, as both the Wiltshire Men and Women took on their professional Glamorgan counterparts. This is the second year that the club has hosted Wiltshire’s NCCA Showcase fixture, and this one was extra special as it was a ‘first’ for both counties who had never played and Women’s and Men’s double header. It certainly gained attraction, with over 750 fans coming through our gates on the day.
The cricket on display across both T20 matches was excellent, with high skill, fast paced T20 cricket on show throughout. While both of the Wiltshire sides succumbed to their first-class opposition, it was not without a number of scares created by some superb bowling, fielding and batting. This was no more on show than when ex club player Jake Goodwin took the attack to Glamorgan as Wiltshire forced a super over finish – which seemed befitting of a great day. Swindon Cricket Club is incredibly proud of hosting these fixtures, and we take our responsibility to the fixture, teams and sport in general very seriously. It was awesome to see such a quality display of cricket, but also to see the club buzzing with fans of all ages. It was also great to see the interaction between players from both matches and the fans, the Wiltshire girls, and Super 1s groups who attended sessions before play.
Following the match Pete Sykes from Wiltshire Cricket commented “enormous thank you for all your hard work both in preparation for, and throughout Friday’s showcase day. You have such a brilliant team of volunteers who all seem happy and willing to want to support the club. This is a testament to the culture you have created. Everyone I spoke to from the club was pleased to be there and pleased to be playing their part.”
From a club perspective we would also like to thank our volunteers who helped make the day a success, this includes club legends such as Kevin and Sarah, but they were ably assisted by a large number of people who helped prepare the ground (which looked a picture), staff the bar, supply the food for the public and players, run the car park, prep all areas of the ground, set up the match day technology and much, much more. Without all of your efforts, we couldn’t have made the day the success it was.
We wish Wiltshire and Glamorgan all the best for the 2025 season, and hope to see them both at the County Ground again in the near future.
