Over the years the club has been proud to have had affiliations with a number of charities and causes. These have nearly always been due to strong club or ‘cricket’ connections or a charity that works in the local community.
We have run events with charities, hosted events, attended various sponsored charity events (who can forget 30+ cross-dressing men doing the 'ladies only' starlight walk) and have held fundraisers – most recently to support Billy Cookson and Against Breast Cancer/Prospect Hospice through the 2019 ‘Pink Day’.
This has led us to think about nominating a yearly charity to support. Following discussions before Christmas with the charity in question, as well as strong local and player/supporter links, we are excited to announce the Swindon CC charity of the year 2020 is Prospect Hospice (Registered charity 280093).
Keep your eyes peeled for a soon to be launched Prospect Hospice event that SCC is hosting, as well as confirmation of when our 2020 ‘Pink Day’ will be, which will again benefit Prospect and ABC. We are thinking of events/ways to support the charity through the year, but if you are reading this and have an idea you are keen to promote, please get in touch.
For those that do not know about the AMAZING work Prospect Hospice do, please read on. They are INCREDIBLE……
Since 1980, Prospect Hospice has provided dedicated end-of-life care and support for people from Swindon and north-east Wiltshire. We provide our care in our In-Patient Unit at the hospice in Wroughton, in the homes of patients through our locally-unique community based nurses and Prospect@Home service, and also to patients at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
We have Therapy and Family Support teams who offer therapy support, a day hospice, group work and one to one carers and bereavement support, as well as dietary welfare advice.
In 2018-19 we supported 2,555 patients across all our services. With 255 patients being admitted to out In-Patient Unit, with an average stay of 11 days. There were 692 new referrals to our family support team, along with 900 patients being supported at the Great Western Hospice and 348 patients being supported at home.
In addition to our main hospice site in Wroughton we also have our Wellbeing Centre based at Savernake Hospital near Marlborough, which also offers many of our services to people living in Marlborough and the Vale of Kennet.
Prospect Hospice is a charity and we depend on the local community to bring our care to patients and their families. With just over a quarter of our income coming through statutory sources, the greatest share of the £9m it costs to deliver our care and services last year was raised through activities including 18 shops, fundraising events and challenges, a weekly lottery and many more community-focused activities.
We achieve this through a dedicated retail and fundraising team, supported by the skills, experience and generosity of hundreds of volunteers, who collectively help the hospice achieve our goal of reaching more people who need our services.
