The Presidents XI defeat the Arkells XI

This week saw the long running Presidents Day fixture between a Presidents XI and an Arkells XI take place at a blustery County Ground.

As is tradition, the day started with players and guest enjoying a meal, expertly prepared by Sarah Aubrey - we definitely were not short of cheese! During the meal the President, Randy Roze, thanked all those in attendance as well as a wide range of club players, supporters, helpers, grounds staff, committee members and sponsors. This included flagship sponsors Coe Capital Wealth Management who were represented by David and Mandy Coe, as well as Deacons Jewelers, represented by Richard Deacon himself. It goes without saying that without the support of the people and organisations mentioned above we would not have had such a successful 175th anniversary season on the field and would not have been able to grow the club in terms of members, events and functions.

Once the players could drag themselves away from a free lunch, the 30 over a side cricket match began. The Presidents XI lost the toss, but were surprisingly asked to bat on what looked a good pitch and quick outfield. It proved to be so, with the Presidents XI racing away at 10 runs an over. The Arkells XI found wickets difficult to come by as batsman came, scored runs and retired at the agreed score of 25. With batsmen returning to the crease Jon Sore was the pick of the batsmen with 45 and Kennedy the pick of the bowlers with 5-0-16-2 as the Presidents XI finished 246-4.

In reply, the Arkells XI put up a spirited run chase that saw three of their batsmen retire - Withey, Mercer and Johnson. The Presidents XI, expertly led by Liam Tucker, did keep picking up wickets though which kept them ahead of the game. The President himself picked up 2-43, which was marginally ahead of Richard Deacons 2-46, although 'the Deac' did pick up two dynamite catches in the field! Eventually the Arkells XI finished on 196-8 with the innings brought to a premature end (four balls!) due to rain starting to fall.

Despite Nick Arkell and the Arkells team trying to claim that the unfinished game should be called a draw, the trophy was handed back to Swindon following last years Arkells victory. The attached picture shows Nick Arkell handing the trophy to SCC President Randy Roze, while the players enjoyed a drink courtesy of Arkells brewery.
