Following the below announcement, Greg's funeral has been confirmed to be at Kingsdown Crematorium on Friday 21st March at 12.00pm. Following the service there will be a gathering at the cricket club.
Swindon Cricket Club is deeply shocked and saddened at the sudden and unexpected death of Greg Tompkins earlier this month.
Greg joined the Club from Moredon Royal Oak Cricket Club as a stylish right hand batsman and occasional bowler. He was a very correct player who was affectionately named by his team mates as "The Elegant GT" and was a consistent member of the Club's First XI, a team he captained in 1974, scoring eight centuries including a highest score of 129.
Shortly after joining the Club, he was elected Secretary in 1971 and held this office for the next four years.
Arguably he will be remembered most for the considerable time he expended working at the County Ground in the days leading up to cricket matches by preparing wickets and the outfield, and also carrying out maintenance work around the Ground as and when required, over a considerable number of years and as recently as last year. He was by nature a perfectionist and jealously guarded the quality of both the wickets and the outfield he had maintained and prepared.
Greg was a man of character who was not afraid to voice his opinion but he was always prepared and ready to help and support you whenever necessary.
Swindon Cricket Club has lost a true Legend who will be very sadly missed. RIP Greg.
We will look to share funeral details as they become available.
